Learning how to study

For many students who have just started university, mastering academic writing and methodology are among the biggest challenges: How do I write a term paper? How should my presentation be structured? How do I take protocol of my lab experiment? How do I cite correctly? What, actually, is a research question? What should I do if I can’t find any motivation? How do I cope with the amount of assigned readings?

To find help for these and other problems, you can turn to the following places at Freie Universität Berlin:

Every semester, a wide range of workshops are offered on topics such as stress management, exam preparation, dealing with writer’s block, reading techniques and academic work. Some of them are also held in English.

In the Mentoring Program, mentors help students with finding the right learning strategies and acquiring subject-specific methodological skills. They also offer their support when it comes to preparing for exams, term papers, or solving problem sets.

The modules, offered by the Center for Academic Advising and Psychological Counseling, provide you with comprehensive information and tips on self-organization, exam preparation, academic writing and more.

The University Library regularly offers training courses on working with academic literature, e.g. literature research, how to cite correctly, and how to use citation programs. The dates can be found on the UB's website or in the course catalog.
