Doctorate
Another possible path after graduation is pursuing a PhD. A PhD demonstrates aptitude for in-depth academic work based on one’s own original research, which can grant access to higher leadership positions and is sometimes even a prerequisite for entering certain fields.
To obtain the degree, one has to write a piece of academic work (the dissertation) and go through a thesis defense in the respective discipline.
With an individual doctorate, research is conducted autonomously under the supervision of a professor.
A structured PhD program takes place within the framework of a doctoral program (e.g. at the Dahlem Research School’s Graduate School, the German Research Group’s (DFG) Research Training Groups).
Besides sufficient German and/or English skills, requirements for a doctorate usually include a first above average university degree.
